Researcher and PhD candidate Charlie Wagner, banished to an outpost in the Shetland Islands, discovers methane ice bubbling to the ocean surface – a phenomenon that intrigues Professor Lehmann. Meanwhile, the abnormal behaviour of whales off the coast of Vancouver Island causes concern for local cetologist, Leon Anawak.
In France, Dr. Roche investigates the death of a local chef following a possible outbreak of food poisoning. In Norway, Dr. Johanson discovers a new species of ice worm blanketing the Norwegian continental slope, being an unsettling find for Hovedstad's business interests.
Roche becomes increasingly concerned having identified a deadly new strain of bacteria that spreads across the region. Reeling from the sinking of the Juno, Wagner and Lehmann observe a mysterious light and sound phenomena during footage of the shipwreck.
Anawak finds himself in trouble when he goes to extraordinary lengths to analyse the unexpected genetic similarities between the mutated mussels and a beached whale, only for Sato to come to his aid. Sato's tip-off to Johanson regarding the true extent of Hovedstad's permit proves correct.
Sato confirms the discovery of ice worms amassing on continental slopes elsewhere around the world. Acting on his instincts that the anomalies are connected, he connects Anawak and Johanson. Putting the pieces together, Johanson is fascinated by Wagner's theory behind the mysterious light and sound phenomena.
As the world mourns the destruction caused by the ice worms, Johanson leads a team of international scientists to present their seemingly impossible theory to world leaders. However, without the support of one Johanson's most trusted and reputable peers, the scientists lack credibility and find themselves without financial assistance.
