Kurt Wallander is involved in a case concerning a missing 8-year-old girl. The only things found are some candy and the girl's bike. Kurt becomes obsessed with finding the girl alive, and the minutes are ticking away. They are against the clock, and the first 24 hours are crucial. The parents are in a dispute over custody, and the father has plans to take the girl back to Chile.
